This Week InSecurity – February 28th 2011

Looks like it’s going to be another busy week for the Council. We’re working two cases referred to us from the FBI, both complex cases involving elderly victims and multiple frauds. We’ve always known that the elderly are especially vulnerable to identity theft and other scams, but they can also be heartbreaking.

In one of the cases, the victim is at risk of losing her home because she has been conned out of so much money. And what’s worse, the evidence so far points to a group of unscrupulous scammers who are constantly selling her information to others so that the misery just won’t end.

On Thursday we’ll be meeting with detectives at Fremont police department in the East bay, and we’re delighted to see how committed they are to reaching out to victims and making sure they’re aware of the resources that are available to them. Stay tuned.
