Dead Ringers – How Identity Theft Can Follow You to the Afterlife

Think identity theft only haunts the living? I recently read a troubling story in Forbes magazine about how the IRS paid out more than $12 million in tax refunds to the deceased.

According to the story, the crime is actually quite easy to get away with, for two simple reasons. First, there’s a publicly available record of deaths in America known as the Social Security Death Index that includes the Social Security number, along with name, address, date of birth and even last known zip code of the deceased.
